How to fill it in

Keep the page where you'll actually see it, by the bed or in your bag, and log each hot flash soon after it happens. Write the date and time, circle an intensity from 1 (mild) to 5 (intense), and note roughly how many minutes it lasted. Then tick every trigger that applied in the hour or two before: a coffee, a warm room, a stressful meeting, a poor night's sleep.

Don't try to be perfect. A rough entry made in the moment is worth more than a detailed one reconstructed from memory at the end of the week.

How to read it

After a week or two, count your entries, then count how many of them each trigger was ticked in. Dividing the second number by the first gives you the share of your flashes where that trigger was present: ticked in 8 of 10 entries means 80%. The second page has a tally table for exactly this.

A trigger that shows up in most entries may simply be a normal part of your day, so treat the tally as a lead rather than a verdict. Change one thing at a time for a week and see whether the pattern moves. Bring the diary to your appointment; concrete notes give your clinician more to work with than memory does. For the common triggers and why they're thought to matter, see the list on the Flare page.

Prefer not to do the maths?

Flare is a hot flash and night sweat tracker that does the counting for you: log an episode in a few taps, and it shows which triggers appear in your flashes, your top trigger, and the time of day you're most at risk. Free, no account, and your data stays on your phone.

Questions

Is this medical advice?

No. The diary is a note-taking tool. It can show you patterns to talk through with a doctor or menopause specialist, but it can't diagnose anything, and hot flashes can have causes other than menopause.

How long should I keep it?

Two weeks is a practical minimum to see anything useful, and a month is better. One page holds 16 entries, so print a second copy if you have several flashes a day.

Which triggers are on the sheet?

Alcohol, caffeine, exercise, hormonal shift, hot drinks, hot rooms, poor sleep, smoking, spicy food, stress and sugar. They're the same triggers the Flare app tracks. Use the Notes column for anything else.

Do I need the app?

No. The diary works on its own, with nothing to sign up for. Flare does the counting and the percentages for you, and shows your top trigger and the time of day when flashes are most likely.
